Stair Handrail Modification
Moving into a new house is always exciting, except when you can’t get your bed upstairs. I got a call from a lady to see if I could help with her situation.

Challenge
Provide a removable yet robust handrail that is stable whilst walking up and down the stairs.
Materials Used
Structural Timber, Screws, Threaded Inserts, Bolts, Epoxy Glue, Coupler Nut
We decided that making the handrail removable would be the best solution. I enjoyed this job as it is completely out of the box, to make a handrail removable but yet be strong and not look like Frankenstein.
Cutting all the screws and installing threaded inserts means bolts can be used. This makes them repeatedly removed and rebolted. The post was a little more challenging as it would take some lateral load from people pushing and pulling in it as they go up and down the stairs.
I made this nice and strong by epoxy gluing a threaded rod into the end of the post and a long coupler nut in the base of it. By adding the shroud to give it even more rigidity and hid the join in the post.
