Office Slat Wall
Using beautiful American Ash Timber to create a stand out feature. It was also interesting and challenging as it couldn’t be installed as one piece because getting a wall this size up the stairs was not possible. I had to create a method to manufacture it to be assembled on site including the frame.

Challenge
Create an office divider that filters distraction and can be admired for it’s beauty.
Materials used
American Ash Timber, Saw, Spirit Level, Dowels
There was two days in the workshop and as you can imagine the workshop smelt great with all the shavings from the American Ash. After machine all the timber to size and finish I then machined out pockets on the top rail for the slats to slide up into to then be lowered and glued on locating dowels on the bottom rail. All the work in the workshop paid off as the assemble went very smoothly except for one thing. The issue was that when the height was measured it wasn’t known that the ceiling was higher by the solid wall section (where it was measured) than the rest of the nib wall by a good 10-15mm. This meant that I had to raise the suspended ceiling as much as possible, but my wall was still having to push it up a bit to get the heights level which put a lot of load on the top rail that it wasn’t designed for. So, to help it all stay up and level I needed to support it from the roof with timbers etc. and to make sure it couldn’t be seen.
It all turned out great and it’s a beautiful feature to their office space. They loved the American Ash so much that they got me to make a pinboard for the lunch room to tie it all in.
